Introduction of FRP Composites in Concrete Columns

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are gradually utilized in civil constructions. The advantages of FRP composites include superior strength or stiffness to weight ratio, free-form and tailored design characteristics,
high degree of chemical inertness in most civil environments, etc.
The relatively high cost of FRP composites is being eased by several recent developments, such as: (1) reduced cost of FRP manufacturing by pultrusion, resin transfer molding, filament winding and automation or semi-automation; (2) reduced material demand in the highly priced defense industry; (3) expansion of a highly competitive market in sporting and leisure goods; (4) prospects for large volume use in the civil sectors; (5) design and construction of FRP composites in conjunction with conventional materials, such as concrete, steel, etc.
The information related to the research and applications of FRP in civil structures has also increased dramatically in recent years, with at least one to two conferences focused on FRP being organized every year.
One of the most active areas of research is related to the applications of FRP in reinforced concrete (RC) columns.
This paper intends to provide a state-of–the-art review on the applications of FRP composites in concrete structural columns. Based on the available literature, both glass FRP (GFRP) and carbon FRP (CFRP) are the main types
of FRP materials used. The FRPs are used for retrofit of existing RC columns and for new constructions.
